For many learners Jobs Growth Wales + not only offers a provision toÌýlearn new skills andÌýexperience,Ìýit’sÌýalso a chance to gain confidence and find out more about yourself.Ìý

That’sÌýcertainly true for learner Abby Jones, who joined Jobs Growth Wales + in January of last year,Ìýunsure what she wanted to do in the future.Ìý

“I went to college for a month to do hairdressing which made me realise that hairdressing is a hobby and not something I want as a career,â€ Abby explained.Ìý“After that I was working full timeÌýas a waitress…then I joined Â鶹´«Ã½.”Ìý

When she first enrolled on Jobs Growth Wales+, Abby had one clearÌýobjectiveÌýin mind. “My main goal was to figure out whatÌýIÌýwanted to do as aÌýlong-termÌýcareer,â€ she said.Ìý“IÌýexpectedÌýitÌýto be just likeÌýschoolÌýbut Â鶹´«Ã½ was different.ÌýIÌýmet amazing people which was great.”Ìý

Throughout her time at Â鶹´«Ã½, Abby embraced new opportunities, including an administration placement.ÌýÌý

“It helped me realise thatÌýIÌýdid not want to go into anything like that,â€ Abby said.Ìý“It helped my confidence a bit,Ìýmeeting new people and working in a new space.”Ìý

JGW+ also allowed Abby to hone her essentialÌýskillsÌýqualifications, helping her improve in English, Maths and Digital Literacy.ÌýÌý

“Studying with Â鶹´«Ã½ is a lot better than school,â€ she explained.Ìý“When youÌýdon’tÌýunderstandÌýsomething,Ìýthe teacher running the class will make sure everyone understands before they move on which is amazing because withÌýEnglish,ÌýIÌýhave always struggled a bit.Ìý

“Whenever I would finish a class,Ìýmy tutorÌýwould always check thatÌýIÌýwas enjoyingÌýmyselfÌýand thatÌýIÌýunderstood it all.ÌýIfÌýIÌýwasÌýstruggling,ÌýtheyÌýwould let the teacher know on my behalf.”Ìý

Alongside her studies, Abby gained valuable experience through part-time work in hospitality.Ìý

“When I was working myÌýpart timeÌýjob it taughtÌýmeÌýa lot about what different jobs can be like. ItÌýtaught me how to greet customers,Ìýhow to handle bad situationsÌýandÌýhow to work withÌýunfamiliarÌýpeople.Ìý

“TimeÌýmanagementÌýwasÌýalsoÌýa great skill to learn.ÌýItÌýhelped me make sure I was at work on time and make sure IÌýdidn’tÌýoverwork myself. My confidence in the workspace after joining Â鶹´«Ã½ was a lot better and helped meÌýtoÌýnot second guess myself as much.”Ìý

One of Abby’s standout experiences wasÌýgoing toÌýBarcelonaÌýwith fellow Â鶹´«Ã½ learners and staff. It wasÌýher first time travelling abroad.Ìý

“I had never reallyÌýwentÌýon a holiday before and i have always wanted to travel,â€ she said.Ìý“BecauseÌýIÌýwas withÌýa big groupÌýofÌýpeople,ÌýIÌýknew thatÌýIÌýwould feel safe.ÌýI wasÌýexcitedÌýto meetÌýnew people and to be able to share the amazing experience with them.”Ìý

The trip pushed Abby out of her comfort zone and created lasting memories.ÌýÌý

“We took part inÌýsailing andÌýbananaÌýboatingÌýwhich was amazing. We also did go-karting which was by far my favourite activity.ÌýI also very much enjoyed the evenings where we went out exploringÌýandÌýwas able to see what Barcelona looked like.”Ìý

Looking ahead, Abby has ambitious plans for her future. Inspired by both her experiences at Â鶹´«Ã½ andÌýone of her favourite TV shows,ÌýCriminal Minds,ÌýsheÌýhas made theÌýdecisionÌýto studyÌýpsychologyÌýwithÌýthe Open UniversityÌýin September.ÌýShe is then hoping to progress into a career.Ìý

She said:Ìý“After I finish myÌýdegreeÌýI will be doing myÌýMastersÌýdegree in Forensic Psychology so I can be a fully qualified Forensic Psychologist and go into it as aÌýfull timeÌýjob.”Ìý

Reflecting on her experienceÌýwithin the Jobs Growth Wales + programme, AbbyÌýsaid:Ìý“The staff in Â鶹´«Ã½ are amazing and have always treated me with respect and patience,ÌýwheneverÌýI wasÌýstruggling or I got confused they would always take their time to help out and make sureÌýIÌýwas okay.Ìý

“I am very proud that I have gained a lot of confidence throughout my time atÌýÂ鶹´«Ã½Ìýfrom a mix of the Barcelona trip,Ìýenrichment projects and trips,Ìýas well as meeting new peopleÌýin centre.”Ìý
